This week we continue on the theme of Transportation. We will take a closer look at vehicles that are used by community helpers. We will also learn about the important jobs that some community workers do.

Social Studies:
1. Community Helpers matching- Cut out the pictures on this worksheet and match the community helper to the vehicle he drives. Discuss what these community helpers do to help other people and why they need to drive the type of vehicle they drive.

2. Read a bunch of books about community helpers and the vehicles they drive. Check out PreKinders & Mrs. Nelson's Class for some books ideas that go along with the them of Community helpers.

3. Phonics Road Way Letter X
4. Easter Egg Hunt- hide various letters, including x, inside Easter eggs and go hunting for them
5. Write the letter x with your finger in shaving cream while saying the sound for x

Special Note: The letter is a "barrower letter" which means it is two sound that merge to form the x sound. The letters K and S blend together to make the X sound. This might be helpful to know and explain to your children when teaching the sound of X.

For April week 3 we will be focusing on fruits and vegetables. Then on day three, there are some Easter lessons. We'll continue to work on gentleness as the fruit of the spirit. We'll also practice sorting by color and comparing. The letter of the week is Ww for watermelon.

Here are the supply and book lists for April week 3.

And here is the prep for April week 3 day 1:

1. Print out the fruit and veggie clip art. Depending on your child's cutting skills, you can cut the pictures out before hand or have your child help during the activity. Perfect cutting isn't required, just enough to seperate the foods.

2. Divide your large sheet of white construction paper into six somewhat equal sections. With matching markers, label each section with a color word: red, blue, yellow, purple, green, and orange. So in one section write the word "red" in red marker, in the next write "blue" in blue marker, and so on.

3. Gather your clip art pictures, your label paper, scissors, and glue.

The action rhyme for fruits of the spirit had to be made really small to fit on the lesson plan, so I'll put it here too.

Fruits of the Spirit – God Helps Me Be Gentle Action Rhyme
Just watch the gardener and you'll see (Form circles with hands, and place over eyes)
How gentle he is with his tree. (Pat one hand with the other)
The branches that are broken, he will fix. (Hold out arm, then let hand bend at wrist)
He gives strength and love to the little sticks. (Hold up index finger in front of you)
God is gentle with me - I'm so glad! (Point to yourself)
His Spirit comforts me when I'm sad. (Make sad face)
He gives me his love every day! (Hug yourself.)
He always hears me when I pray. (Place hand around ear.)
God helps me be gentle too. (Point to yourself.)
If you ask him, he'll help you. (Point to a neighbor.)
With gentle hands, I'll help others. (Hold hands out in front of you)
Jesus likes us to love one another. (Hug somebody.)
God helps me be gentle and meek. (Point to yourself.)
He helps me use soft words to speak. (Point to mouth.)
He helps me not fight or blame others. (Put fists up in front of you.)
He helps me to love each and every brother. (Hug somebody different)

*You might want to learn a little bit each day instead of all at once.

I added the fruits of the spirit lesson for day 3 to the link, but if you already printed out day 3's lesson plan, then you can just read it here:

Fruits of the Spirit - Let's Pretend We're Gentle Mommies and Daddies

Show your child how to treat his bear or doll gently, ex., comb their hair gently, change diapers carefully, gently rock them to sleep, sing to them, dress them gently, feed them gently, burp them gently, pat them and comfort them when they cry, put band-aids on their boo-boos gently, etc. While you do this activity, emphasize the lesson concepts that God treats us gently, and he likes it when we treat others gently. Then have your child practice being gentle like mommy.

Happy Chinese New Year

Let's celebrate the year of the Rabbit on February 3, 2011. Our family has quite a few Chinese friends. So, we will celebrate Chinese New Year with them. We will probably eat jiaozi (similar to pot stickers) and moon cakes. The room will be decorated with RED - everywhere! We will also say, "Zhu ni xin nian kuai le"or "Wish you a happy new year." You can learn more here. I suggest reading the Zodiac sign definitions for each family member. We got a good laugh at how close they were to our personalities.

Here are some things we will do at home to teach Anabelle about the Chinese New Year.

Red Envelope
It's a tradition for Chinese parents to give their children a red envelope with money in it. Red symbolizes it's a gift. We will start the morning giving Anabelle a red envelope with a dollar in it. We are using this one.

Year of the Rabbit
We are coloring this page (the rabbit is on page 12) and talking about the Chinese character (letter) for rabbit. Also, we will be making these cute rabbit ears.

Decorations
You can't have a Chinese New Year party with out making several lanterns and hanging up these greetings

Food
For snack we will make Moon Cakes together. Here is a kid-friendly recipe. Just watch carefully for the eggs.

Reading
To end our time we are reading the "D is for Dancing Dragon: A China Alphabet"  by Carol Crane book suggested on the lantern craft page.

There is a ton more you can do to celebrate! Have fun and Happy New Year!

January Week 2

Here are the lesson plans:

Day 1:
Supply List
cardboard
colored paper
scissors
paint
markers
glue
cotton balls
white paper

Prep
The instructions for the Number N are here. You can cut out a piece of cardboard and draw an "N" on it. You can prepare the rest of the "N" craft while your child works on decorating the "N".

Day 2:
Supply List
container for your "storm" -bottle, jar or tupperware
food coloring
water
vegetable oil
glitter
masking tape or painter's tape
balled up socks, bean bag or crumpled paper for "snowball"

Prep
You may choose to either prepare your storm bottle before or during the activity. Tape some shapes on the floor. We have a rug on the playroom floor that the tape works well on, but you may want to test out a small strip first to make sure it doesn't leave a mark! If tape won't work for your home, you can also draw large shapes on construction paper and lay them on the floor for your child to throw the "snowball" at.

Day 3:
Supply List
Ingredients for the snowball cookies - butter, sugar, egg, vanilla, salt, flour, m&ms or chocolate chips, powdered sugar
Fuzzballs of different colors
Bowls/containers lined with colors that correspond to your fuzzball colors
spoon, tweezers, chopsticks if you want your child to use them

Prep
Prepare the cooking activity depending on what your child can handle. I usually get all of the ingredients out and have them pre-measured and then Nathan adds each thing to the bowl. I do like to have him count out cups or teaspoons of things to practice his counting and attention to a task. For the sorting activity, line your bowls or containers with colored paper.
